Hello!

Maybe this is old news but was surprised to run into it by chance last weekend. Alas, I couldn't go see the exhibition.

The poster shot for this was a 15th century-looking red tunic. See third column, last picture on the right. Does anyone know what this "dress" is called? I'd love to find more info about it...

Thanks!!

Hi Marianne,

The "tunic" is known by the Burgundian followers on the board. I'll see if we can dig up a little more information. I seem to vaguely recall that it was "reworked" at some point, however, I'm not 100% certain.

Hi Marianne,

The tunic is known as the 'gown of Charles the Bold', it was captured in 1476 at Grandson, and a part of die Burgunderbuete. At sometime in the 1st decade of the 16th century, it was altered to fit a Swiss mayor or Alderman, but I think otherwise, the garment was unchanged.

Thanks a lot for the information. Turns out I'd seen the jacket too, but in black and white and small pictures.
Going quickly through Bruges really made me want to do Burgundian. Shame I have no opportunity, really :/

The red gown is beautiful. It looks to me quite a lot like early-16th-century styles. How much was it altered?

Going by the current catalog, they think the sleeves were re-tailored at least.

We'll have to live vicariously through the Museum catalogs since no US visit is planned and Vienna isn't the most inexpensive town in the world.

Jeff saw the coat a couple of weeks ago when he was in Belgium and they had it displayed backwards. It might be good if they got a curator who knew something about clothing to work on the exhibit.
