Did oilcloth or anything like it exist for Medieval clothing?

I've made a linen surcoat and I'd like it to be more weatherproof.

Thanks,
Steven

You can reasonably assume I'm talking about life or death combat or battles, NOT duels or playing tag in the salle.

Since no one more knowledgeable has posted... My impression is that for that purpose medieval people would have used wool, which will resist rain for quite a while, and remain more warming even when wet.

Perhaps you could have a wool mantle to wear over the surcoat in bad weather?

I'm not certain. I know that sometimes items like jacks, contained waxed layers. Was it waterproofing? I don't know, it could have been used to stiffen the defense.

Other items like water bearing objects were lined with pitch.
