Hello everyone,

Fist, let me tell you how i enjoy reading you all. I'm pretty new in here and i have already learn a lot. I love the equestrian part, giving me a lot of idea for my horse's new kit!

To stay in the subject, for some of you that saw our group in mont Ste-Anne, Quebec, you know that our cavaliers had to incarnate some knights from the golden fleet order. The armour were order by the organisation of the event, so as the caparaçon and livrée.

In order to make our own costumes and armour, having the desire to be close to the real thing, I'm looking for documentation, pictures for both military and civilian costumes for the Knights (first part of the XVth century) and decoration, banners...etc.

So if someone knows where I could find this precious information, it would be really neet!

Thank's a lot!

Hi Caroline,

Well, there is a book available that is essentially a heraldic roll - "le Grande Equestre de le Toisson d'Or", which shows the knghts in harness appropriate to the reign of Philip le Bon.

What decade of the 15th century are you primarily interested in? The clothing styles change radically across the course of the century. Obviously, you are interested in Burgundian fashions?

Hi Caroline well the style and garment depends alot under which "Duc" you choose your periode. Philippe / Jean / Charles .
The armors change a bit beetween Philippe and Charles due to the fact of armor fabrication came with the style of its blacksmiths. Philippe used french ( methods) while Charles had 2 major suppliers depending on its period one was germanic the other italian. As soon as you have a "Duc" in mind look through his history and his knights of the golden fleece and choose a period. I will help you find the armors appropriate with them.
Caro if u need any more info give me a call i am in Deux-Montagnes ( under the name Cuinet). BTW the book recommended before me is a very good reference for what you are looking for

That's the two book, numbered set. I think I have number 313.

It is a worthwhile investment and if you can read French, Book One blazons the arms that appear in the facsimile book 2. It's a lovely set.

I think there is a less expensive option as well.

Thank's everyone!

The director of the troup has one of the armorial, it's really lovely but beside showing the heraldic's, you cannot see the armor well underneath the livrée, nor the horses details (harness).

They played the knights under Philipe le Bon (Guillaume de Vienne, Robert de Masmines, La Trémouille and de Croy) so i believe french jousting armours would be the best bet. Horses with caparaçon and chanfrein. It's really hard to find anything about the personnalities and particularities of those knights, I keep on looking for some stories by "Olivier la Marche" but for now, didn't find much.

You all gave me good advice, i'll start from there.

La Cuine, I probably know you but not under that name, i'll try to get in touch!

Thank's again!
