Okay, since fire gilding is hazardous, I've opted for the paint and sizing method. This is my black from the forge, open faced, raised from a single piece of metal, sallet. Side view Sallet by Jiri Klepac Back view. It's a very nice sallet, but a little on the heavy side. [ 08-21-2009: Message edited by: Fire Stryker ] -------------------- ad finem fidelis

The next step is to prep your work area and materials. In the next image, I've laid down the base coat of a golden yellow paint to prep the surface for the size and the leaf. When using a yellow leaf, yellow is a good base coat to hide minor flaws in the gilding. The base coat is allowed to dry. It dries to the touch very swiftly. I've let my dry for several days. In the next image, Bob has been filing my orb to get it to sit the keel properly. This weekend, I will be applying a very fine red and hopefully the size. Keep watching.
