The American Sword of Chivalry Tournament

April 26 & 27, 2008

Poway Valley Rider's Association, 13446 Tierra Bonita Road, Poway, CA

Amicis prodesse, nemini nocere
To do good to my friends, to injure noone

A weekend of thrills as top riders from England, Belgium, Australia and the US compete with lance and horse in tests of skill, courage and honour.

Competitors vie for the right for their name to be the first engraved on the Sword of Chivalry, which has been granted as a perpetual prize by the Royal Armouries in England.

This is an official Royal Armouries sanctioned event.

This is a competitive equestrian event, not a staged show. Competitors wear full harnesses of plate armour and score points by breaking their 11-foot long lances on the shields of their opponents. Knights will also accrue points by competing in combat with pollaxes, club melee and other activities.

Single day tickets and weekend long passes available. A different program each day, don’t miss a single thrilling moment!

-Meet the knights
-Mounted skill at arms competition
-Hunting games display
-Foot combat
-Lure coursing with sight hounds
-Swordsmanship demonstrations
-Games and activities for the kids
-Live music
-Vendors offering a range of unique, hand crafted items
-An assortment of yummy foods and treats
-Exhibitors in all categories
-Fun for the whole family!

We are pleased to welcome special guest and noted author Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng of the Higgins Armoury Museum. Dr. Forgeng will be giving talks and demonstrating 'Martial Arts of the Medieval Knight'. Dr. Forgeng is the author of The Medieval Art of Swordsmanship: A Facsimile & Translation of Europe's Oldest Personal Combat Treatise, Royal Armouries MS I.33 and The Art of Combat: A German Martial Arts Treatise of 1570 by Joachim Meyer. His presentations will focus on information from these manuscripts, as well as in other manuscripts he's working on, including Leckuchner and Pietro Monte.

From my point of view, the Sword of Chivalry event went marvelously. I had a great time! I helped with the set up and ended up taking 3500+ photos, my favorites being in the Sword of Chivalry set on my flickr accoutn: www.flickr.com/photos/douglasherring/sets/. I took some limited video too, but I won't be getting around to editing that until the end of the month. Best, Doug-null

Yes, Jeff was at the Hackaland tournament- as a matter of fact, he -won- the tournament! It's his first individual win, so it's a big deal.

James just got back and judging from the pix he took the Hist Div competition looked pretty stiff! Congrats to Jeff!

The photos from the Sword of Chivalry Tournament are great, thanks for sharing them.
