Jeff called and brought me up to date on what he's been doing this week.He spent the week following Toby around, and got to see loads of armour and stuff in the Kelvingrove stores. Got to see the cuirass to some famous russetted armour that was separated from the rest of the harness and which Toby successfully aquired. Apparently this is the first time this cuirass has been together with the rest of the armour since the 16th C. or something, so there was much rejoicing among the armour boys. He also got to see some original copies of René's Tournament Book, which he said was pretty amazing. Perhaps most amazing was a receipt book which contained wager slips signed by Marshal Boucicault. He said they were receipts for gambling debts- in one case there was a promisory note to pay 300 francs to the winner of a pollaxe fight in which he had competed and lost. And we think golfers bet high on their games!!! The jousting moved to The Museum of Scottish Country Life, Kittochside this second week of the series. Friday was the hunting games, which apparently Jeff is doing pretty well at. He got Carla (the Spanish mare he usually rides) back, and he was very pleased about that. He was blasé about the games, telling me he's won a few and scored well other times, so he must be doing OK. Saturday he said he was a bit nervous, and Carla picked up on it. He said he did "OK", but nothing to write home about. I think he said he got 12 out of a possible 20 points, which wasn't enough to get him into the finals. He decided to spend the second half of the day relaxing and figuring out how to get Carla in the groove. Apparently he figured it out because he came out with all guns blazing on Sunday. He said Carla was a perfct angel and ran like she was on rails. First session Sunday morning was Stacy, Evil Steve and Philippe (all members of Destrier). Second session was Toby, Will and Jeff. Jeff got the only perfect score of the tournament so far (20 points) and won his session. Yeah! He lost to Will in the finals, but he was really happy about the day's events. He said Will was the point leader as of today, but Jeff feels Toby will probably win overall. Toby is incredibly consistent and a keen competitor (we don't call him The Tobinator for nothing!), so Jeff is probably right. Tomorrow he's off to the Netherlands to spend a couple of days hanging around Archeon with our friend Arne, and visiting museums. They're going to Our Lady's Church in Bruges to see the tomb of Charles the Bold, and I'm bummed because I can't be there!!! Next stop on the jousting express- House of the Binns Gwen [ 07-25-2005: Message edited by: Ginevra ]

Probably won't get to Bruges as it's 3+ hours from the Archeon, and Arne doesn't finish till about 2:30 every day. Not enough time for the drive and to see it. Sounds like we need to make a special trip sometime.JH

Hi Peter-Almost forgot your question about the scoring. As I recall the scoring is- 3 points for a breast hit 2 points for an armhit 1 point for ?? (can't remember!) 1 point for a break (discretionary) 1 point for horsemanship (discretionary) Head and saddle are illegal target areas, strike either and your run is disallowed/no points are awarded. Hitting the horse is cause for immediate expulsion from the tournament. I'll try to remember what the single point target area is. Gwen

No, that's definately -not- it, as it seems that with the system you add points for hitting the head! I've also never seen anything to indicate extra points for unhorsing and points for touching. The images of the block squire's calls are from the RA handout but the scoring system is someone else's. They're also listing a grand guard, so this is a takeoff on a later style of jousting, as RA tournaments use 15th C. armour where there is no grand guard. Gwen

Well, getting hit in the head happens. This past weekend Toby dropped his lance a bit early and when Jeff dropped his Toby's lance deflected Jeff's lance up and caught Toby square in the face. No damage was done, as a matter of fact Toby didn't even know it, but Jeff's pass was disallowed because of the illegal strike.Jeff said he saw it happening in slow motion and though "OH $H!™!" but was powerless to stop it. Weren't you around last time when I was pulling pieces of wood out of Toby's armour and handing them to the audience through the fence for souveniers? Gwen Gwen
