It is with profound sadness I report that Bella is gone. She fought the good fight, and in the end it became clear that even expert medical care couldn't guarantee a fix for her compromised gut. She was euthanized humanely in a warm, clean stall by caring hands, and we are grateful her life did not end alone in a cold muddy pen in a haze of pain.Bella was like a diamond to us, rare and precious. A beast of infinite patience and good humor, she was game for whatever we threw at her, be it hordes of shrieking children or jousting. Jousting became her final passion, and she clearly delighted in the crack of a good hit on the quintain or the splintering of a lance. She danced with impatience to be fully kitted out, and strutted like a peacock when fully caparisoned. She never bit or kicked and was mild as a kitten with the smallest children, yet was fearless and bold with an armoured rider on her back. She gave her all even when she was tired or hurting, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have had the privilege of having been her owners. Bella was such a shining star that she had fans on 3 continents who knew her by name. She gave us some of the best times of our lives and we will never forget her. She will be sorely missed, and our living history pursuits won't be the same without her. Jeff & Gwen

Gwen, Jeff, we are so sorry. It is true (although it sounds such a cliche) that given enough time you will remember the wonderful times with Bella rather than your pain at losing her too soon. We have never had a horse to lose, as it were, but can recall all too vividly how dreadful we felt over having to have previous cats put to sleep - sometimes it is the only kind thing that you can do, but it is never an easy decision.I wish we had had the privilege of meeting Bella, and of seeing her jousting; perhaps you have some photographs that you could bring over in February? I'm sure there are many over here would like to see them, if it is not still too painful for you then. We will be think of you, and sending you our very best wishes, David and Gillian -------------------- Best wishes David

Jeff and Gwen; Please accept my deepest condolences. I love my own horses with a depth that is hard to explain, they are far more than mere "pets", they are your partner and friend, your alter-ego in many ways. This is something that I know I have to face with my own horses some day, and I do not envy you for having to precede me in experiencing this sadness. I am very sorry to hear of this, and will have to give my own boys extra attention tomorrow. BTW, Nick Worthington sends his regards, and condolences, as well. My best regards, Gordon Frye. -------------------- "After God, we owe our victory to our Horses"

My deepest condolences Gwen and Jeff. Having lost one of our own horses not so long ago, I know how hard it is. Joram -------------------- Fortiter et Fortis www.medievalproductions.nl

Everyone,Thanks SO much for all your kind wishes and recollections of our big girl. It was a very difficult weekend to pass without her. I persevered however, and though it was really tough, "got right back on the horse" again, and took Petrus out for a tear filled hack Saturday afternoon, in sort of a "Bella Tribute Ride" around all the trails she and I used to go. I have to keep it in my mind that we still have our "Petey", who is nearly the character that Bella was, and is an awesome horse in his own right. He's a little lonely now, but hopefully he'll perk up soon. You've all been so supportive and kind. I'm proud to have you as friends. Jeffrey
