Hi All,

As I posted earlier I am in the process of comissioning a copy of 15th century headstall based on art in Rene of Anjou's book of the tournament, a bridle, bit and set of double reins. I need to locate suitable buckles.

I'm looking for links to whoever out there is makeing suitable ones in brass, strong enough for the task and historically proper. Historic Enterprise used to offer a series of brass or bronze buckles for harness, but I haven't been able to locate them on the website recently. I'm looking for ones at a reasonable price, rather than very fancy ones, but they must be proper reproductions.

Any help greatly appreceated, I'd prefer a vendor Stateside (given I'll need 9 buckles, double didget prices per buckle will be too pricey, at least for the smaller buckles like the throat latch and rein buckles, especially if in UK pounds) , or an overseas one that takes paypal, rather than having to deal with bank transfers or international money orders.

Thanks in advance.

Bob, Have you talked to Doug Strong? I dont know If he has the right type in stock, but he has a fine collection of authentic buckles. He might be able to mold some for you if he has the correct original types...Otto

Hi Otto,

I haven't. I know Doug had some troubles recently with the elements and his house, and he has been very busy with school. I need the buckles ASAP so the harness maker can get to work - I'd like the project done by May. That means I have to get the buckles by the end of February or the beginning of March at latest.

I know Jeff Hedgecock is busy with the last Fraser harness, Patrick Thaden isn't set up just yet to do casting brass/bronze. Mac does pewter, and I can't afford to have him make me steel or brass ones by hand.

I heard of some company in Russia that casts buckles and makes munition armour, but I can't locate them on the net. I just need them to be good csastings, and of a historical pattern.

Hi Otto,

Thanks very much. THeir offerings are a bit early, although one might work. I should contact them and see if they can do any custom work.

Do these work?

I've dealt with him and he's pretty reasonable and quick to deliver.

Hi Dan,

Those are very cool, and thanks for the link. I've always thought of Raymond as doing much earlier stuff. I'd have to check with the harness maker to see if any were suitable, but it's a lead to go on!

Hi Mark,

I'm consulting with my harness maker to see what sizes we need. I should know before next week is out I'd checked out your webpage amongst the first, but most of what you currently have online seem to have that rivet on to the belt arrangement, which I don't think was used on horse tack.

You're welcome.

I also remember Larcheveque having some for sale. Don't know the size or his prices, but here's a pic.

I've got two new sizes of spectacle buckle that might work, as well as an integral plate fleur-de-lis that I think is for harness. Try the buckle page of the new site: http://medievalwares.com/zt/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66_99_101
