Hi all,
I'm currently having problems with medieval hats for riding in. I ride as a man in battle and as a woman in skill at arms displays. Riding as a man is no problem because i wear either a visored sallet or a skullcap covered with a chaperon. However I'm having more problems with a ladies hat that is authentic and actually stays on at high speed! Some of the people i ride with have put a chin strap on a hennin but i've never seen any evidence for this being done in medieval periods. So what did ladies wear when riding and how does it stay on????

I think that the chin strap as chin strap would be questionable, but a veil worn like the young girl in Petrus Christus' painting would be ideal and is how I intend to wear mine.

A lot of the hunting images (some people may have access to others that show different head coverings) depict men and women riding at a leisurely pace. There is a portrait of Mary of Burgundy being pursued by Death and I think she is wearing a hennin in the image, but I don't recall if anything other than fit and pins is holding it on.

I recall some women wearing hats similar to chaprones, but I don't remember geographic origins.
