Hi, I am trying to find accurate references/images of arming doublets for the 1520's (Pavia to be specific) - say - something that a Gendarme would wear under his harness. Later sources seem to show buff jerkins or whole arming doublets made of buff leather in following decades. Eg: Portrait of a Navigator (Ashmolean), Moroni's Gentleman (although the 2nd one is wearing a black short sleeved jerkin with mail sleeves sticking out), the Duc de Nevers portrait, the various images from the Real Armoria Madrid (including those funky slashed leather shorts) and many others later. Earlier than 1520's there are paintings of what looks to be buff leather garments (2 I have found) one sleeved with lace points and one that looks like a normal buff vest (though he seems to be only wearing part armour) and of course the famous Italian image of knight with his part armoured attendant standing behind him in what appears to be a short sleeved red leather reinforces arming garment.
Am I way off track? Does anyone have any other info on this? I realise these are all paintings. I am after documentation not speculation as I am trying to make a point of not making any assumptions - well as best as I can anyway! I must admit - I had simply assumed something like a 15thC arming doublet but cut in the 1520s fashion...but I just cannot absolutely prove that!
Thanks,
