Hi, I've just made my second pine plank shield, and I'm wanting to sell it (probably to someone in britain..) but i was wanting to get a rough idea how i ought to price it, based on what you imagine you might pay for something like that if your a relevant re-enactor.

Its made with pine 1x4, with bevelled edges and rim, rawhide reinforcing on the rim, support planks on the back, and a shaped pine handle, made with a drawknife. Its yet to have a boss fitted, but this should be done in a couple of days.

It weighs 5kg, just over the standard ply shield i was issued with by my unit, so its heavy, but manageable and authentic.

and though i say so myself, it looks a beaut.

I'm trying to load up pictures, but I can't see how properly... any tips??

Cheers,

Rob

In order to post pictures you need to have your own web server or post images to Flick'r or Facebook and then add urls to your posts.

there is evidence of shields being distally tapered, ie thinner at the edges. this would make it lighter for you. also i personally do not like screws in most wood work. i would have used either nails and clenched them over, or rivets to assemble the shield. (why go through all that work and at the last muck it up with using modern screws?) the shield looks great!

right, i'll look into tapering them accurately, could be quite a challenge. i've just put a boss on, but need to get some proper coach bolts to do it properly.

i wouldn't say its mucked up with screws. Each screw is countersunk, and hidden completely with a clout nail head glued over the top. so they look like their nailed to anyone who cares to look, but the structure has the strength of screws.

had I used nails I would have been worried about getting a mix between strength and the possibility of splitting the pine board.

also, screws are undoubtedly stronger, and in my group, safety comes first, especially when you can't see the inauthentic screws.

i'll stick up a pic of shield with boss in a second.

cheers!

Tapering isn't much of a hassle. If you have a power plane it is even easier!!

Just take it slowly and work edge to outside.
