Finally, after a few years of searching for a fairly decent priced set of nested weights.

I know that this set is most likely 19th century, but it bears a relatively close match to its medieval/Renaissance counterparts as seen in this Van Eyck detail example of the "Money Lender and his Wife" (1515).

The big difference is that the VE nested weights are more squat and there are more of them, but I think they'll make a good impression.

Nice, now you just need the counting board and you will be all set. Where did you find the nesting weights?

That was my next question! As an aside, how did the counting board work? I've seen it in images and pictures, but how was it used?

The counting board works a lot like an abequs would have. It just depends upon whether you wish to count money value (pennies, schillings, groats etc.) or just plain numbers (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands).

I found the nested weights on eBay. There's someone in Europe selling a set off their antiques site for about 200 euros. Was a wee bit rich for my blood. I think they were 16th c, but had the date firmly stamped in the lid. It wouldn't hav worked, plus I think the lid latch was way more ornate.

Here's a web site that talks about using a counting board.

How to add and subtract with a counting board

Besides the board or a cloth, I need jettons, scales, and coin weights. You'll note the little box in the image and the domino looking weights in the dish in the lender picture. Those are coin weights. Later versions a like a block with the image of the coin stamped in it.

Have a look down the page for jettons.
