The thing they put on in Fort Dodge Iowa every year is out of this world!

I have a friend in Atlanta that never misses it. She has a wonderful collection of Kassai bows too.

The training techniques they use are very interesting. She says that in that instance, Ann Hyland appears to be right on the money -- a good mounted archer's horse is one that will maintain an even pace and a level topline on a loose rein.

Any body have a saddler's source for the proper tack?

I thought it might be interesting to try something other than western medieval.

The site noted above does supply what they say is correct tack for an Eastern European archer impression but I'm not expert enough to know if it is correct

I must have missed that buried in the descriptions. I have seen plenty of the correct tack, I just didn't see a "for sale" link or examples.

I will check again "more in depth". Thanks Ace

Hey All,
I attended the 2003 IHAF festival in Iowa and had a blast! Met some seriously nice people and had a great time learning to fire off arrows while riding.
There where some mounts outfitted with mongolian or asiatic type saddles, but we also used western and english ones as well.
My husband and I are working on our horses with this new skill and it realy doesn't matter what type of saddle your in, I use my "el cheapo" dressage and my husband rides in an aussie.
'Course we plan to eventualy get or make proper asiatic ones, problem is finding ones that fit the horse.
E-bay somtimes have these types of saddles up for bid under "asian antiques" (search word "saddle").
I've also got a book on making a mongolian saddle, ("Mongolian Saddles and How To Make One" by Ron Edwards), and am starting to work on it...wish me luck, I'm not very experienced at woodworking!

Thanks, Thomas

I have been working on a few saddles, though I'm using a different pattern to construct them. The end result is the same, but my construction method is easier than the one explained in "The Mongolian Saddle and How to Make One". The newer pattern also allows me to make variouse different types of period mounted archery saddles, Japanese to Hungarian.
I'm going to attempt to attach a photo of 4 of my saddles in variouse stages of construction. None of the ones shown are completely finished, but it gives you an idea.

Hi Barb,

if you have your images on a web site, you can just cut and past the url in the body of the text. If they don't exist on a different web server, I can post it for you if you send the image to me.
