Hello All,
I've started work on a late 15th c. German infantryman's sword that is supposed to be a re-hilted earlier sword. I'm basing it on one from an Albrecht Durer woodcut (surprise!) of a landsknecht and his lady from around 1498. There's one alot like it from the same period in Oakeshot's RECORDS OF THE MEDIEVAL SWORD. It has a wheel pommel, and a simple horizontally S-curved cross-guard. The one in the woodcut has a rain guard, while the one in Oakeshot's book doesn't. I want to include the rain guard, but I don't know if it should be metal or leather. Does anybody have any ideas about which would be more appropriate?
I would appreciate your feedback.
Cheers,
Jamie

Jamie,

without dragging out the books (which always takes hours, because I end up researching more than I intended), I believe either would be appropriate. Remember that German sword you helped me with? It had the grip leather extended into a rain shield over the sheath. The extant sword of Estorre Visconti in Monza, Italy has a metal one. You've no doubt seen pictures. My photo is BW, so I don't know whether it's steel or bronze.
